The 2022 Spirit of the DISTRICT Award Recipient “Betsy Williams ”
The award is presented annually to a person or persons who have made a significant commitment to the vitality of Downtown Nashville.
Betsy Williams moved to Second Avenue in downtown Nashville in 2006 from her hometown of Thomaston, Georgia, to be the “boots on the ground” for properties purchased by her investor-brother (and Savannah, Georgia, businessman) and his business partners. Since then, she helped launch Savannah’s Candy Kitchen of Nashville in the heart of Music City’s entertainment district. She also founded and operated Music City Suites of Nashville, a vacation rental business offering a dozen prime short-term rentals in the heart of The DISTRICT, until Christmas Day 2020 when an early morning bomb destroyed her home and her business. She also works with Partnership 2020, the Nashville Area Chamber’s economic development initiative.
Currently, she serves as a member of the Metro Transportation Licensing Commission and was a former member of the Metro Traffic & Parking Commission. She is actively involved in the restoration of Second Avenue and hopes to be back in business and living in her beautiful historic Rhea Building (c. 1887) in the near future. Prior to moving to Nashville, Betsy served as editor of her hometown newspaper, started the Main Street downtown revitalization program there, and was CEO of her community’s chamber and development authority recruiting investment for more than two decades. Betsy has served as Chair of the DISTRICT Board and has led numerous board projects with persistence and creativity, including lighting the trees on Second Avenue and now spearheading the study to solve trash problems on First and Second Avenues. Never daunted, she’s a cheerleader for The DISTRICT and downtown. Betsy is married to Kim, her soulmate of almost 34 years, and has one son Graham, who resides in her hometown of Thomaston.
We are Grateful to have such a dedicated and thoughtful advocate standing with us in The DISTRICT.
